New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has already shown his bargaining power with his involvement in Romelu Lukaku’s impending return to Inter Milan.

The Belgium international is set to return to San Siro on a one-year loan deal worth around £7million. Lukaku only joined Chelsea in a club-record £98m deal last summer but struggled during his second spell at Stamford Bridge.

Boehly has now put an immediate end to his tenure in charge of the Blues by greenlighting Lukaku’s return to Inter after becoming personally involved in transfer negotiations. But the absence of a specific clause says a lot about Chelsea’s desire to get rid of the striker.

Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku set to return to former Inter Milan side

Lukaku exit agreed

Romelu Lukaku is set to return to Inter Milan on loan for the season.

Following his £100million transfer from San Siro last summer, the 29-year-old Belgian spent a hellish ten months at Stamford Bridge. He alienated Thomas Tuchel with an unauthorized interview with Italian media last autumn in which he criticized his team’s tactics and admitted he would like to return to Inter.

The striker also only managed 15 goals in all competitions during the season. Inter have reportedly agreed to pay his full salary during the one-year loan spell, which is now expected to be confirmed in the coming days.

Boehly shows his power

Todd Boehly backed manager Thomas Tuchel in the decision to let Romelu Lukaku return to Serie A and became involved in negotiations with the Serie A side.

Chelsea’s new owner used his business network to help push the deal forward, having already established a relationship with Lukaku’s representatives. The striker is represented by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, with Boehly reportedly close to company chairman Michael Yormack.

The move gives Chelsea the chance to pursue their own transfer plans, with Boehly now likely to also get involved in negotiations for Raheem Sterling and Jules Kounde.

The loan clause says it all

Inter Milan would pay a fee of £7million and cover all of Romelu Lukaku’s £325,000 weekly salary during his one-year loan spell in Italy.

But they will have no obligation to buy the Belgium international when the deal ends. This may mean that Chelsea are particularly keen to remove Lukaku from their wage bill for the upcoming season.

And with the striker still having four years left on his contract with Chelsea, it could hint that he will be given a second chance in a year’s time.
