Comparison of TV streaming services – from Netflix to Britbox and Disney Plus

It’s the era of the TV streaming wars, with fierce competition for our loyalty – and our money.

Streaming services offer blockbuster movies, star-studded dramas, and world documentaries.

But as the cost of living crisis rages, many households now see them as a luxury – 1.51 million TV subscription services canceled in the first three months of 2022, including more than half a million because of “saving money”.

But if you only want to keep one streaming service, which should it be?

Our TV preview Sara Wallis gives her opinion.

netflix

The ancestor of streaming platforms, offering unlimited streaming of TV series, documentaries and movies.

How much? Plans range from £6.99 to £15.99 per month.

Best shows: Breaking Bad, Bridgerton, Better Call Saul, The Last Kingdom, Stranger Things, Good Girls, Squid Game, Anatomy of a Scandal, Inventing Anna, Love is Blind, Selling Sunset, Maid.

Sarah says : Despite the recent £1 per month price hike, it’s still hard to compete with Netflix, with incredible output. Ideal for binge watchers and American TV fans. Mega success stories like The Crown make you forget about the occasional dross.

Netflix has an amazing release

First video

Possibly the best TV service you didn’t know you were paying for.

Anyone who subscribes for Amazon packages to be delivered as quickly as possible has access to the huge library of releases on Prime Video.

How much? £5.99 per month. But Amazon Prime membership costs £7.99 per month or £79 per year and includes other benefits.

Best shows: Hacks, Reacher, American Gods, Scandal, The Wilds, Mad Men, Hanna.

Sarah says: One of the best streaming services. Not quite at Netflix level, but you can buy or rent additional movies and series. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and This Is Us drew me in – and I never left.

It’s available in the standalone Apple TV app used by many devices and has built up a decent library.

Best shows: Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Severance, Euphoria, Servant, Truth Be Told, Tiny World, Defending Jacob.

Sarah says: For brand new content, it looks like an exclusive club. A club you’d probably only join if you’ve already paid for a heavy hitter like Netflix.

acorn tele

A UK streaming service launched in 2020 offering a huge selection of dramas and mysteries with a particular focus on UK TV.

How much? £4.99 per month.

Best Shows : Midsomer Murders, The Chelsea Detective, Foyles War.
