TikTok added an authenticity feature on Thursday that was a winner for French app BeReal, taking a page from Meta’s playbook by copying a rival.

The social media giant has described its TikTok Now feature as “a daily photo and video experience to share your most authentic moments” using a smartphone’s front and rear cameras simultaneously.

“You’ll get a daily prompt to capture a 10-second video or static photo to easily share what you’re up to,” TikTok said in a post.

TikTok said the Now feature is available on the app in the US and will be rolling out globally in the coming weeks.

People are flocking to BeReal, a new social networking app that invites users to share real glimpses of their lives rather than chosen moments.

Once a day, BeReal invites users to take pictures of what they’re doing, giving them two minutes to post.

The app uses front- and rear-facing cameras on the phones, putting the “selfies” in context.

The approach is a stark contrast to the carefully curated images common on Instagram and Facebook.

“The BeReal ideal is that you’re just in a moment – where are you and what are you doing right now,” Jennifer Stromer-Galley, a professor at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies, told Reuters. United States.

“Our lives lived, not our best lives – maybe walking the dog or in your pajamas eating cereal.”

Launched two years ago by French entrepreneurs, BeReal has seen its popularity skyrocket in recent months.

The rise of BeReal indicates that people are tired of polished online images that don’t reflect real life, Carolina Milanesi, technical analyst at Creative Strategies, told AFP.

Stromer-Galley, however, wondered if the authenticity factor alone would be enough to keep people loyal to BeReal as other social networks vie for attention.

Instagram told AFP it had worked internally on a prototype BeReal-like feature but was not testing it.

Meta, parent of Instagram, has a habit of copying features such as time-lapse photos and live videos that have proven popular with users of rival apps, bolstering its platform’s appeal while pushing back competition.
